Founders leave Carta for three reasons Capable was designed around

Prices that move with headcount

Carta quotes by tier and stakeholder count, so hiring changes the renewal. Capable has two published prices and no stakeholder cap. See Carta pricing explained.

Friction when leaving

In December 2024 founders told TechCrunch that cancelling Carta required a scheduled meeting; Carta called it a one-time staffing issue. Capable cancels in the app.

Trust in how data is used

In January 2024 Linear’s CEO said Carta used its cap table to solicit a share sale; Carta exited secondaries. Capable runs no marketplace, brokerage or fund.

Capable's AI connector drafts changes; Carta's cap table plugin only reads

Carta made its plugins for Claude broadly available on July 29, 2026, and says the cap table plugin is read-only today.

Capable’s MCP server works with Claude, ChatGPT and any MCP client. It answers questions about ownership, vesting, 409A status and exit waterfalls.

It also proposes changes, such as a draft grant, a new stakeholder or a termination. Nothing changes until an admin approves it in Capable. Read the connector docs.

Moving from Carta takes an afternoon

  1. 1

    Export from Carta

Download the cap table by security, the stakeholder list and the transaction history. If Carta offers you an Open Cap Table Format export, take that too.

  2. 2

    Upload to Capable

Drop the files on the Import page. Columns are mapped for you, including Carta’s split vesting columns. Rows that need attention are listed before anything is written.

  3. 3

    Check the numbers

Compare fully diluted shares per stakeholder with the ownership summary in your export, then commit.

  4. 4

    Invite and carry on

Attach documents, record your 409A and invite stakeholders. Invite counsel as a read-only admin.

What carries over, and what stays with Carta

Comes across

Stakeholders, share classes and their terms, every security with vesting, exercised and cancelled amounts, equity plans, 409A history and the transaction ledger.

Comes across as documents

Signed agreements and board consents attach to their securities. They were executed under Carta and remain valid.

Stays with Carta

Transfer-agent registration, fund administration and SPV bookkeeping. These are separate Carta services, not cap table features.

Carta alternative questions, answered

What is the best Carta alternative for startups?+

For seed to Series B startups that need cap table management rather than transfer-agent or fund-admin services, Capable. It publishes its prices ($1,200 or $3,500 a year), includes unlimited stakeholders, offers monthly billing, and exports Excel and OCF at any time.

How much cheaper is Capable than Carta?+

Capable Growth is $3,500 a year with unlimited stakeholders. Vendr reports a median Carta contract of $15,400 a year across 405 purchases, so a typical Carta customer pays about four times Capable's Growth price.

Can I import my cap table from Carta?+

Yes. Upload your Carta cap table and stakeholder exports, or an Open Cap Table Format bundle if you have one. Capable maps the columns, including Carta's split vesting columns. Or send us the files and we migrate you free within 24 hours.

Is there a free trial?+

Yes. Every company gets a 14-day free trial with everything unlocked, or 30 days when importing from Carta, Pulley or AngelList. Subscribe during the trial and your card is charged only when it ends.

What do I lose by leaving Carta?+

If you use Carta only for your cap table, nothing essential. If Carta is also your transfer agent or fund administrator, those are separate services that Capable does not offer.

Does Capable sell or trade my company's shares?+

No. Capable runs no marketplace, brokerage or fund. Your cap table data is used to run your cap table.
